Abstract:

Baluns and transformers are often treated as separate components from the rest of the amplifier or other circuitry. However, hiding within every RF grounded inductor or bias choke is a balun. A tapped inductor is much more efficient than a transformer with a primary and a secondary. Sometimes these can be combined in a single coupled structure that balances and transforms in a minimal space... And sometimes they can't.
