Gary Kelson has over 35 years experience in high tech electronics ranging from
VLSI chip design to general management. He received the BSEE and MSEE degrees
from UC Berkeley.
He was Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Silicon Systems,
Inc. where he led all product and technology development. SSI became the
worldwide leader of Hard Disk Drive signal processing chips with sales exceeding
$1B.
He was Senior Vice President and General Manager of TCSI Corporation where he
led the Personal Communications business. TCSI developed and licensed digital
cellular chip sets for TI, AT&T, Asahi Kasei Microsystems, Oki Electric and
others.
Gary is currently the Executive Director of the Berkeley Wireless Research
Center.
BWRC consists of 60 graduate students and 12 faculty engaged in pre-competitive,
public domain, research into the design issues supporting next generation
wireless communication systems. The goals of the Center are focused on the
implementation of highly integrated, low-cost, CMOS Radio SoC's using advanced
system architectures and algorithms. Application areas of interest include:
improved spectrum utilization, cognitive radios, ultra-low power sensor
networks, advanced a/d and d/a converters, RF/mm-wave circuits and low-power
digital circuits. Proof-of-concept prototypes are designed using BWRC's unique
design flows and fabricated using state-of-the-art processes. The Center
includes a complete laboratory for circuit and system evaluation from DC to 65
GHz.
Gary has been an instrument rated private pilot for over 25 years and currently
owns a Beechcraft B36TC.
