berkeley '99 - some impressions
[go on to part two]
It all starts with a perfectly normal berkeley sunset:

a neat trip to mammoth mountain (more pics will follow), mono lake,

and yosemite national park. julia and me set out at tenaya lake on
the toulumne meadows, well equipped
with a bear box, a wilderness permit and some more. headed for yosemite valley.

the morning after the bear came to eat our bread, we are still
happy
and alive...

a first sighting of half dome. certainly the most funny looking
mountain after the "horu"!

julia atop clods rest

looking back, can you see tanaya lake in the distance?

we had to go up! and down! this. with all the people. phew

to get to this nice cliff above half dome's north face

we were more scared to look over the rim than all the japanese and
americans around

but, we made it

up and back down. this is the valley with el capitan on the left.

an el cap closeup:

of course we did not only go to yosemite: when martina came over we
were off to truckee river canyon just north of tahoe city that sported
some more goodlooking cliffs.
our warmup 5.10 on big chief's central wall

almost entangled

pulling up

julia is up and away too

martina just before she pulled that other awesome 5.11

it doesn't look like an overhang, but it surely is...

made it, but barely. looks more like an overhang from here.

and some city life of course. after the free melissa etheridge
concert in sf.

a beautiful bouldering spot at stinson beach, just north of the
golden gate.

uhhh. more stinson beach

ah, yes we almost forgot the crazy americans, that showed us how to
balance on the cal main library walls at night.

turtle rock on the tiburon peninsula sports nice traversing

only one picture of beautiful castle rock for now, the sandstone
there is certainly a good reason to
move to palo alto, sometime...

did you notice the bud?

this is where we all live. 2524 dwight way, just a block from
telegraph. berkeleys main street for
the student community.

and of course there had to be a tower on the house too.

that's the porch with our lovely lounge chair. it's great to hang
out and
watch what's going on in

peoples park (which translates to "pennerpark" in
german!) just accross the street.

that's lea and daniela on the porch.

our man ali.

a view into my tiny room just under the roof.

and the living room I share with

olatanji. constantly on the phone... no. actually he is... ?
who knows.

we all like going to berkeleys farmers market on tuesdays and
saturdays.

you can buy fresh fruit and vegis,

meet friends,

even try what you buy,

eat,

or get a massage.

more market.

and lot's of tomatoes.

lea is all packed up at the market.

he likes to give us lettuce for the rabbits. thank you!

when we return from the market, our fridges are filled,

or even overfilled with lot's of good food to

prepare lot's of yummy dinners. feasts.

mmmmh.

with the food we

vahid and erica,

daniela,

liz,

lea,

farrah,

daniela again,

even more lea,

and jan,

often have have nice parties with our friends.

that sometimes create some leftovers...

to work out, i got a new bike.

sweet cockpit, huh?

closeup.

oh, and even though there is the big atlantic ocean inbetween here
and home, i am not yet totally cut off. at least some news get's through. forget the
american newspapers though.

this is telegraph on a nowmal sunday morning. there is fog, not too
many people out yet (11:30am) and

lot's of funny things to buy from the merchants:

next time you want to have your name engraved on rice, this is the
place to go.

even bonzai trees.

i pass through here every morning when i go to work, to meet

nice people like per!

the uc berkeley campus is a very pleasant and calm athmosphere.

they sure envy all the old roman and greek styles. but it all looks
more like klenze to me. maybe
something got lost on the way over?

oh, berkeley streets without fog. but naturally with the usual
califonia traffic jam.

ali almost cut off his foot when he mowed the lawn. here you can
see vahid peeking through the

valve he hit with the lawnmower yesterday. lucky him, the lawnmower
didn't hit his foot.

jamil alone

and with a new girlfriend. very happy.

vahid and erica hanging out.

ken after he returned from 2 weeks in hawaii.

must have been exhausting.
