BWRC Lucent WaveLAN IEEE 802.11 Setup

The BWRC is running a Lucent WaveLAN IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN for roaming laptop computers and wireless networking testing purposes. Laptops can be checked out in the admin office on a daily basis.

There is one logical network (BWRC WaveLAN Network one) configured on two channels (channel 2 and 10). All clients using this network name can log in to this network. Additional ad-hoc networks can be set up on the clients.

Configuration
Access Points (WaveMANAGER/AP v.2.06, Firmware v.3.38)
Access points are configured using the Lucent WaveManager/AP tool on a host PC.
When reset they boot to a default IP and later switch to DHCP if no IP is configured. To set up an access point start the WaveMANAGER tool, power up the AP and scan for AP's with the WaveMANAGER tool. Select the new AP (if not visible check on the network route from your host to the AP, Lucent scans for AP with their own type of packets, that can not pass routers!) and change it's IP to the IP desired. Log on to this IP and modify parameters as desired.

The AP's in BWRC are configured as follows:

IP Gateway Subnet Mask System Name Slot A Slot B Software
128.32.62.252 128.32.62.2 255.255.255.0   WaveLAN PC Card Bronze, channel 2 WaveLAN PC Card Bronze, channel 10 AP v 3.38
128.32.62.253 128.32.62.2 255.255.255.0 BWRC_53_WavePOINT-II_99UT05200991 WaveLAN PC Card Bronze, channel 2 WaveLAN PC Card Bronze, channel 10 AP v 3.38
128.32.62.254 128.32.62.2 255.255.255.0 BWRC_91_WavePOINT-II_99UT05200990 WaveLAN PC Card Bronze, channel 2 WaveLAN PC Card Bronze, channel 10 AP v 3.38

Software updates for the WaveMANAGER software and the accesspoint firmware are available on: ftp://ftp.wavelan.com/pub/SOFTWARE/IEEE/WP-II/AP/,
if you want to support point-to-point connections with two AP's use the firmware on:   ftp://ftp.wavelan.com/pub/SOFTWARE/IEEE/WP-II/PTP/

When updating the firmware, be sure to store your configuration in WaveMANAGER before updating. Make a copy of the firmware too, because the download process modifies the downloaded firmware image with the paramters that are to be stored in the AP (i.e. the hardware ethernet address is read from the AP, stored in the binary image and the downloaded to the AP...). Original firmware masters are available for download at BWRC: wpnt338.bin and wptp337.bin

A new AP design and software is being developed by Lucent (source Greg Wright).

The current driver is available from ftp://ftp.wavelan.com/pub/SOFTWARE/IEEE/PC_CARD/WINDOWS/

It allows for configuration of a station and network name, power management, ad-hoc networking mode and some basic characteristics of the network topology. When the network name is set to ANY it acts as a wildcard, selecting one of the freely accessible WaveLAN networks within range. The station name is best set to the hostname.

The TCP/IP control panel should be set to DHCP, WINS via DHCP, gateway 128.32.62.2, domain eecs.berkeley.edu, DNS 128.32.62.22 and 128.32.62.21, domainname suffix search order eecs.berkeley.edu ad berkeley.edu.

When modifying configurations, only a restart of the PCMCIA card is necessary, not of the whole system. Just stop the card, pop it in and out and wait for the Plug and Play driver to reinitialize. It is thus only half plug and play :-(

Win98 Driver (NDIS Miniport Driver v. 4.00)
WinNT Driver
It is the same software as for Win98.

Linux Driver
Lucents driver is available on: ftp://ftp.wavelan.com/pub/SOFTWARE/IEEE/PC_CARD/LINUX/
Andy Neuhaus administers the drivers http://www.fasta.fh-dortmund.de/users/andy/wvlan/

Another good resource is the Linux Wireless LAN Howto by Jean Tourrilhes.

It is available under: ftp://ftp.wavelan.com/pub/SOFTWARE/IEEE/PC_CARD/WINDOWS/

Windows Client Software (WaveMANAGER/CLIENT v.4.02)
The WaveMANAGER/CLIENT tool allows for network operations, perfomance and range measurements from any client to an AP or to other clients (ad-hoc networking mode only).
PCMCIA Cards (Firmware v.4.08)
Currently only bronze cards (no encryption, 2 Mbit/sec) are available at BWRC.

All PCMCIA cards should be set up with the current firmware and the matching driver.
Firmware update tool: ftp://ftp.wavelan.com/pub/SOFTWARE/IEEE/UPDATE/FIRMWARE/CARD/WIN/
