Staff Engineer

I have worked as Staff Engineer from 1989 until 1994 in the Technology Research and Science Institute (IPCT) of the Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS*). During these years I worked in many different projects, among them: 
Library automation - I worked in a 3 people team, who decided on the best strategy to automate all the functions of all the libraries of the university. I worked on the specification of the hardware and software needed for the university. I worked as system manager during the implantation of the university central library automation (cataloguing, loaning, purchasing, periodicals ..). 
The success of this automation has been followed over the years for more than a dozen of other universities in Brazil, including Universidade de Sao Paulo (USP*).
Network Infrastructure - I worked in the team, who defined the network infrastructure of the university, from Ethernet LANs to FDDI backplane. I decided on type of cards to be used in different computer platforms up to type of fiber to be used in the backplane and tools necessary to deploy the whole network.
Language Learning Laboratory - I designed together with two other people a new multimedia language learning laboratory for the university. This project started with the application for a grant in the Japan consulate, specification of hardware and software platforms to be used and installation of the whole laboratory.
Importing Department - I worked on the creation of an importing department in the university to enable professors and researchers to have easy access to new technologies. This work included investigating all the legal issues related to importing laws, hiring specialized people to run the department, and doing myself the first importing processes.
Technical Support - I worked on  the analysis of the hardware an software needs of the different departments of the university. This analysis was used to foresee budget and prioritize implantation of new labs in the university.

* PUCRS is a private catholic university. It has about 18000 students . It has been founded in 1938.
* USP is the largest university in Brazil.
